“Liwa” adalah Ibu Kota Kabupaten Lampung Barat, berasal dari kata “Al-liwa (bahasa arab)” yang berarti Bendera, menurut salah satu versi cerita bahwa pemberian nama “Al-liwa” yang sekarang dikenal dengan Kota Liwa dimulai dari sejak runtuhnya Kerajaan Sekala Brak kuno yang dipimpin oleh pemimpin terakhirnya bernama Ratu Sekarmong yang dikalah kan oleh para pembawa ajaran Islam saat peperangan yang maha dahsyat antara bala tentara Kerajaan Sekala Brak yang dipimpin langsung oleh Ratu Sekarmong dengan Maulana Bersaudara yang berasal dari Pagaruyung beserta pengikutnya. Pada saat peperangan tersebut runtuhlah Kerajaan Sekala Brak Kuno, dan sebagai tanda takluk maka para pengikut Ratu Sekarmong menyerahkan “Al-Liwa” (bendera) kepada Maulana Bersaudara. Maka sejak saat itu Ibu Kota dinamakan Al-Liwa.

Kota Liwa berjarak + 246 km dari Bandar Lampung, dapat ditempuh kurang lebih 4 s.d. 5 jam perjalanan dengan menggunakan kendaraan roda empat.
Selayak nya Ibu Kota Kabupaten, geliat pembangunan di Kota Liwa nampak di tahun-tahun terakhir ini. Pemerintah Kabupaten Lampung Barat berbenah untuk menjadikan Kota Liwa menjadi tempat yang representatif sebagai Ibu Kota Kabupaten, di jantung Ibu Kota Liwa dibangun Kebun Raya Liwa, yang merupakan salah satu dari sekitar 40 Kebun Raya yang adadi Nusantara, Taman Kota Ham Tebiu, Tugu Adipura/Tugu Kopi dan Kawasan Sekuting Terpadu yang merupakan kawasan dimana terdapat Islamic Center (Masjid Bintang Mas) kebanggaan masyarakat Lampung Barat yang masuk dalam 100 masjid dengan arsitektur terindah di Indonesia, GOR Ajisaka dan Stadion Sekala Brak. Di kawasan ini juga pada setiap tahun nya di gelar perhelatan tahunan Pemerintah Kabupaten Lampung Barat “Liwa Fair” yang bertujuan memberikan hiburan dan serta sekaligus ajang untuk menginformasikan keberhasilan pembangunan pemerintah daerah kepada masyarakat Lampung Barat. Selain itu menjadi wadah untuk saling berbagi informasi, kegiatan sosial dan bahkan promosi produk unggulan dan potensi yang ada di Kabupaten Lampung Barat.

Di pusat Kota Liwa juga tepatnya di Lapangan Merdeka dibawah Monumen Paksi Pak Sekala Brak atau dikenal juga dengan Tugu Kayu Ara, pada setiap bulan juli digelar salah satu perhelatan akbar Pemerintah Kabupaten Lampung Barat yaitu Festival Sekala Bekhak, yang merupakan festival budaya terbesar di Kabupaten Lampung Barat, Kemilau Budaya Bumi Sekala Bekhak akan bisa kita saksikan dalam perhelatan yang berlangsung selama + satu minggu ini.

Berada pada ketinggian 800 hingga 900 dpl, membuat Kota Liwa beriklim yang sejuk (dingin). Untuk itu, anda yang akan mengunjungi Kota Liwa, sebaiknya membawa jaket dan pakaian yang cocok di daerah dingin. (EGC)

We will be able to witness the glow of Bumi Sekala Bekhak culture in this one week event.
